I would love to fill a corner of my garden with a whole bunch of these curious flowers. Any ideas what I should look for in catalogs and at the garden centers? I suspect it is a mint because the stem was square. It was a volunteer in the old vegetable garden field.

I love that color. It does not look familar. If you find out what it is - let me know.
It just strikes me curious when the stem grows straight up through the flowers. I've seen it before and it might be fun to have a little special place for such plants. I know the one in the picture would be really nice in a bouquet if it has good staying power. I left this one in the ground in hopes it will multiply.
It looks familiar, but I can't place it. Have you checked your wildflower field guide (or internet equivilent?)
I've checked my books and found nothing similar. When I think of it I browse the internet but so far haven't found what I'm looking for. I guess I need to check around for wildflower specialists and show them the picture.
Definitely one of the Mint family - the nearest I can find is Wild Basil, though my illustration is more of a pinkish flower. The latin name is clinopodium vulgare, which might give you a start to finding it!
Pretty flower, though - and it got me hunting through a book of Mediterranean flowers, and reminiscing!
Gilly,
You are such a help to me with clouds and now wildflowers. I will keep looking and check the wild basil to see what it looks like. I'm guessing color can vary. Isn't it fun to go exploring for special plants and get caught up in all that you find along the way.
