TAI CHI PRACTICE

SILK REELING CHEN STYLE

Did you do your morning exercises?
Tai Chi to start the day is a wonderful way to energize and relax into whatever the day
presents.
If you are a Tai Chi player and recognize flaws in my form, please forgive this humble student. I am enjoying my practice and can always use helpful insights to hone my skills.

WOW! How inspiring!

Thank you so much for your sweet comments. They made me smile this morning. ((hugs))

Well I walked a half mile barefoot. :) Also, I did pilates, but that is a whole different "ball of wax" than your beautiful meditative Tai Chi. I should rewatch our video tape of doing Tai Chi to What a Wonderful World with the kids. Remember that?

Beth,
You know you amaze me all the time with your keen eye and clear capture of so many neat scenes and objects. In Tai Chi there is a concept of doing things effortlessly and I see that in you as you take in the world around you. You may feel the effort but it doesn't show.

Aisling,
I probably need to get that video out and review it. I haven't done that form in quite awhile. I do enjoy the Tai Chi forms that I know well enough to let the muscle memory do the work and the mind quiets and it is meditation. I'm learning a new form and I'm not there yet.
Is it barefoot season already? I'm not sure I'm ready yet.

It is about 76 degrees here today! It is very windy, so it doesn't feel that warm. Definitely barefoot weather. Isn't there a poem about going barefoot "earlier in the spring"? That's my plan. :)

I wish we lived near each other.
So many of our interests are similar. I usually do yoga most mornings, weather permiting I am out most of day creating my new smaller garden. I am up at 5:00 am and before I know it - time for lunch and then an evening meal - and day is over.

Aisling,
Found it!

I'd Pick More Daisies
By Nadine Stair, age 85

If I had my life to live over,I'd try to make more mistakes next time.
I would relax. I would limber up.
I would be sillier than I have on this trip.
I would be crazier. I would be less hygienic.
I would take more chances, I would take more trips.
I would climb more mountains, swim more rivers, and watch more sunsets.
I would burn more gasoline. I would eat more ice cream and less beans.
I would have more actual troubles and fewer imaginary ones.
You see, I am one of those people who lives prophylactically and sensibly and sanely, hour after hour, day after day.
Oh, I have had my moments And if I had it to do over again, I'd have more of them. In fact, I'd try to have nothing else. Just moments, one after another.
Instead of living so many years ahead each day.
I have been one of those people who never go anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a gargle,a raincoat, and a parachute.
If I had to do it over again, I would go places and do things.
I'd travel lighter than I have.
If I had my life to live over, I would start barefooted earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall.
I would play hooky more. I wouldn't make such good grades except by accident.
I would ride on merry-go-rounds.

I'd pick more daisies!

Ernestine,
We do keep bumping into our common interests and I do believe it would be fun to share them and then explore our differences. One thing I know for sure, you are a very early morning person. I like mornings but take them at a more leisurely pace and certainly never start as early as you.

I have wanted to learn Tai Chi, but haven't made the time. It looks so peaceful and meditative..yet I seem to remember watching a class that paired people in sort of combative poses..have I mixed this up in my mind, or did I really observe this?

Never seen Tai Chi done - it looks really good. And I see the cat thought about joining in, but then went off!

I'd love to do it, ut I can't stand unsupported for very long, and certainly can't move around without a support. So don't know that it would suit me, though it certainly looks interesting.

LR,
Tai Chi is one of the martial arts, but for many of us, we use it like Qigong which is part of the healing arts of China. I do it for balance, flexibility and the free flow of energy through the meridens of the body. And it can become meditative.
The pairing of Tai Chi players is called push hands and can be either playing with energy or practicing defensive movements. Watch ads for classes and April 24 will be World Tai Chi day and there may be free demonstrations in your area. You could try it on for size.

Gilly,
The cats are often under foot and I have invented a movement I call 'step over the cat'.
Many teachers work with seated students and teach the upper body movements. Because breath work is part of the process you could still get a lot out of Tai Chi. Then possibly there maybe small leg movements with little lifts and side steps that may or may not be helpful in range of motion for you. If you are curious I'm sure there are Tai Chi teachers everywhere.

Tai chi is amazing. I love your cat's involvement too! You should make a video to post for us. I'd love to see the form you're working on. Time for me to learn a new one.
Happy spring!

Oh, I like that poem - so true!! I think I'm already having lots of crazy moments and eating lots of ice cream too.

Wendy,
I'm so glad you found time to stop by and share the conversation. I also think the poem is wonderful advice to folks as they age to remember to have fun as we go along.
The Tai Chi form is new to me and I am enjoying working with a new teacher.
I remember your wonderful names of movements story you created for your blog last year and hope some day to do something similar.
Among my Tai Chi family we do the movement Carry Tiger when a friend is going through hard days and I have Carried Tigers for you and will till you are back blogging.
