GRACE NOTES

Grace Notes are musical ornamentation, added notes that give a lilt or character to the musical phrase being played. I find ideas and concepts that add to my personal experience and save them in my book of quotes and I believe they add that type of grace to my life. Along with a strong sense of God's Grace.

I love to sing, I think it must be a part of what it means to be human. We all seem to respond to music, the emotion, the danceable beat or rhythm. The sounds can lift our spirit or calm our anxiety. I wonder why that is so universally true. Over the years I have found the following thoughts that remind me of this inherent trait of human kind.

Universe--

Uni - one, verse - song.

One Song!

My idea is that there is music in the air;

the world is full of it and you simply take as much as you require.

Sir Edward Elgar

"I sing because I'm happy, I sing because I'm free,

for His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me."

song - His eye is on the sparrow.

"Bach gave us God's word,

Mozart gave us God's laughter,

Beethoven gave us God's fire,

God gave us music that we might pray without words"

This is my Symphony

To live content with small means, to seek elegance rather than luxury,

and refinement rather than fashion,

to be worthy, not respectable and wealthy, not rich;

to listen to stars and birds, babies and sages,

with heart, to study hard; to think quietly, act frankly, talk gently,

await occasion, hurry never;

in a word,

to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious, grow up through the cement,

this is my symphony.

Thank you for reminding me to remember.

You are welcome. We are singing the "Hymn of Promise" this week in church and I love this phrase. "There's a song in every silence, seeking word and melody: There's a dawn in every darkness, bringing hope to you and me." A nice metaphor don't you think?

I am the most unmusical person! But I do love singing in a congregation (no one knows if I make a mess of it!) And I like listening to some music, even though I could never tell you what it is!

I love plain song, and sacred chanting by choirs or monks. Don't know how else to put it!

Found your blog through "One Woman's Journey" - it is just so interesting - I will be back!

Welcome Gilly,
So glad you stopped by. Like you I thought I wasn't much of a singer until a singing coach came to our church and she said if you can laugh you can sing and I was hooked. Now I'm in the choir. I'm amazed. I did sing all the time for my own pleasure and the sheer joy of expressing myself.

I think singing is the language of the soul. I sing in the shower. I sing with my grandkids. I sing when I'm walking. I think the carribean people are smart. They sing in church - throughout the whole service. Not just a hymn here and there. They sing in the streets, at work, in the bus, by the ocean.

I took a nursing course about 5 years ago and there was a student from Granada in my class. Well, we just sang while giving our patients a bath and sang while making the beds. It really does lift the spirits.
We had to be quiet when giving medications, in case we made a mistake. Or taking blood pressure, so we could hear properly.
Ah....music. Just love it! And I loved your grace notes.

Wendy,
I hope you are coming back to read my responses. Thank you for affirming what I also believe that we sing because we are spiritual beings and can't help ourselves.

I feel exactly the same thing about music. Have you ever seen August Rush? The music for that movie was written by a composer who lives near here. It is the most amazing music.

Just spent over an hour playing the piano--using a chord chart I bought years ago.

I think I can play. I couldn't believe what I was doing...ah, to write music the way I hear it!

Your blog is delightful!

Oh my goodness, Beth, I'm so glad I scroll down and check comment numbers. I'm always afraid I'll miss a visit from someone. We loved the movie August Rush. What a complete uplift. It was lent to us and we reluctantly gave it back. We will have to buy it soon to watch it again.
It sounds like the piano is a joy that needs to be explored. Have fun.
